Direct booking strategy for independent hotels
A clear, no-jargon playbook for independent hotels that want to grow direct revenue without hiring a full marketing team.
Start from the guest, not the tech
Most "direct booking strategies" begin with tools — booking engines, chat widgets, PMS integrations. That's the wrong end of the telescope. Start with the guest journey: where do they first hear about you, where do they compare, where do they hesitate, where do they book?
The four pillars
1. Findability
You need to exist on Google Hotel Ads, on metasearch, and in the map pack for the neighborhood you sit in. Without that, direct is a rounding error.
2. A website that closes
Speed, mobile clarity, and a rate that beats the OTA by a small, credible margin. Nothing exotic.
3. A reason to book direct
Flexible cancellation, a room upgrade, a bottle of local wine on arrival. Small, human, and framed as a member benefit.
4. A relationship after the stay
A single well-written email 60 days after departure, offering something specific for a return visit, outperforms almost any paid campaign.
What good looks like
For a well-run independent hotel in Europe, direct share in the 35–55% range is realistic within 12–18 months. Below 25% usually means one of the four pillars is broken.
